How can I tell if my pet has fleas or ticks?How can I tell if my pet has fleas or ticks?

If your pet has fleas, they will let you know one way or another! They may be itchy and scratch themselves more frequently, or they may shake their head or body to try and get them off. If your pet has a severe flea infestation or an underlying flea allergy, they may develop red and irritated skin from excessive licking, scratching or chewing. You may also be able to see them crawling around on your pet’s skin if you part their fur.

Ticks are a bit different and can go long periods of time without being detected. The best way to know if your pet has ticks is to check them regularly by your hands all over their body paying close attention to their ears, legs, feet, armpits, tail, and under their collar - especially after hikes or other fun outdoor activities!

Fleas tend to hang out around the neck or base of the tail, ears, eyes, and stomach. You can spot them by parting your pet's fur.

Yes! It’s actually very common for pets to have allergic reactions to fleas. Many dogs and cats struggle with Flea Allergy Dermatitis seasonally or year round.

To reduce your pets risk of exposure to harmful parasites, we recommend year round flea, tick and heartworm prevention to keep them happy and healthy! Yearly protection can come from monthly chewables, topicals, or even wearable collars.

If your pet has live fleas or if you are seeing live fleas in your home, we recommend treating your environment. This includes bedding, furniture, carpets, etc., as fleas like to burrow and hide in these dark spaces.

How can you remove a tick?How can you remove a tick?

Use tweezers to grasp the head of the tick as close as possible to the skin (without pinching your pet!) and gently pull back in a slow and steady motion. Wash the bite site with soap and water. Rubbing alcohol may help disinfect the area and help further prevent infection. Disclaimer: If you find a tick on your pet and are not comfortable removing it on your own, seek veterinarian help! It’s important to remove the entire tick, including the head, to prevent infection.
