Pets can have allergies similar to humans! Most commonly pet allergies are related to their food, their environment, or the changing seasons. Pets with seasonal allergies tend to be itchy, may have red or inflamed skin, eye and/or nasal discharge, or even mild to moderate skin swelling. Pets with food allergies may experience GI related issues such as chronic diarrhea. Environmental allergies can cause pets to lick or chew themselves excessively, sometimes resulting in open wounds.

If your pet is having an allergic reaction, you may first notice their skin turning red. In more severe cases, your pet may also experience some facial swelling resulting in puffiness around their ears, eyes, or mouth. If your pet struggles with seasonal or year round environmental allergies, a prescription-strength or over-the-counter antihistamine such as Apoquel or Chlorpheniramine may be recommended!
